Jackson State

This reflection was originally posted on May 4, 2016.

As you remember the Kent State shootings today, don’t forget that lost amid the shuffle of the Spring 1970 unrest on college campuses was a nearly identical shooting at Jackson State University, a HBCU at which the Jackson police fired 140 rounds at a women’s dormitory under incredibly similar circumstances. (67 rounds had been fired at Kent State.) Two people died and a further twelve were injured a mere eleven days after Kent State.

While eight of the National Guardsmen involved with the Kent State shooting were indicted, no arrests were ever made in connection with the Jackson State shooting. You can draw your own parallels.
